Live dates for the two Cachagua penguin days from Santiago
Watching Isla Cachagua penguins from the beach is free and needs only binoculars: the islet sits about 100 m off Playa Grande de Cachagua and rises about 30 m. A boat from Zapallar takes you to the legal 50 m minimum and shows the ledges and burrows better, but big swell can cancel it, and then the beach is the fallback.
“The waves were too big for a boat trip but Terry, our guide, had a back up plan to see the penguins from the beach.”
GetYourGuide review of the private boat from Santiago · September 2026
The beach is the fallback when swell cancels the boat.
On GetYourGuide: the private boat from Santiago
Seeing Cachagua penguins on your own is easy with a car: about 160 km and 2.5 hours from Santiago airport, by Ruta 5 Norte, the Nogales exit and Ruta F-30-E. From Valparaíso it is about 90 minutes to Zapallar. Watch from the beach for free, or book the local Zapallar boat, from €40 per person, for the 50 m view.

The Cachagua penguins colony is mainly Humboldt penguins. Island Conservation puts the breeding population at 600–1,800 birds with about 450 nests a season, and a CONAF census counted 187 adults and 273 chicks in autumn 2021, so counts vary with the season and the source. Some guides also report Magellanic penguins, but official sources do not, so treat them as occasional.

Cachagua penguins are on the islet all year, so any month works; summer is best, and winter brings more cloud. Two breeding peaks, in spring and in autumn from April–May, put more birds on the rock. Boat sightings vary with the weather and the breeding cycle, so a calm sea on the day matters more than the month.

Amazing trip! A special thank you to our TRILINGUAL guide Juanito! He brought us along an unforgettable hike to the Humboldt Penguin viewing point. From there, we went on to horseback riding along the coast.

Had an amazing trip, very well planned and good amount of time for every activity!! The highlight of our trip was our wonderful guide Sebastian, who has been my favourite guide so far on this trip - you could really feel that he was passionate about his job and had a lot of knowledge about the country!!

We had an amazing day! GoPinguin is a small, but very professional company, and you really get value for money! The visit in the harbour of Valparaiso was such a surprise, and, of course visiting pinguin Island was amazing, with lots of humboldt-pinguins.

This was a great day out from Santiago. We enjoyed going for a walk to see the Penguins, lunch on the Ocean and then a horse ride along the coast. The whole day is very well organised starting from the communication the day before with pick up time. The guide Juan was exceptional, and we had a lovely driver. The tour is also very well priced. If you want to get to the coast from Santiago and enjoy some activities I would highly recommend.

Everything was very well organized. A very nice and interesting tour of the area around Valparaiso. First we visited the sea lions in the fish harbor, then there was a boat trip to see the penguins. On the paraglider beach you had a wonderful view of the bay and there were also delicious Chilean food and drinks. Finally we made a detour to the big sand dune and tried sandboarding. Everything was great, definitely recommended if you are in Valparaiso.

Cachagua penguins are an easy outing with children: the beach view needs no boat, and one private boat tour listing lets children up to 5 ride free on a lap, with life jackets included. Bring binoculars for the 100 m beach view, a windbreaker and sun protection, and closed shoes for the coastal walks to the viewpoints.

The islet lies 100 m offshore and nobody lands, so expect small figures on granite through binoculars, or about 50 m from a boat, not a walk among the birds. For that, Magdalena Island near Punta Arenas is the place.
