King penguins in Tierra del Fuego are watched from a viewing hide, not on foot among the colony: the hide stands about 30–50 m from the birds, after a flat walk of about 5 minutes from the visitor center. Binoculars are provided at the hide, but a telephoto lens makes the difference for photos. If you want penguins at 2 m, that is Magdalena Island, not here.
“It is a long and tiring trip, but it is worth it. We are 30-50 metres from a lot of king penguins”

A king penguin tour from Punta Arenas runs from about 7:00 to 21:30–22:30, and only about an hour of that is at the colony. Guests count roughly 7 hours in the van and 2–2.5 hours on ferries. The rest goes to stops: Porvenir, wildlife on the road, and the wait for your timed slot at the park.

Parque Pingüino Rey is the only stable king penguin colony open to the public in Chile, on the shore of Bahía Inútil in Tierra del Fuego. King penguins first appeared here in 2010, the park opened in 2011, and the first chicks hatched in 2013. Counts are small and vary: about 60 birds in one 2025 report, 35–90 on an operator's page.
The park publishes no current count.

Bring warm layers, binoculars, ID and money for the park entry: a king penguin tour in Chile is a cold, 14–15 hour day mostly spent in a van and on ferry decks. One guest in May called it a “very cold and long day trip”. Pack snacks unless your listing includes a meal.

Be honest about the trade: about 1 hour with the birds at 30–50 m for a 14–15 hour day and about $126–181 per person including entry.

The four reviewed king penguin tours in Chile hold ★4.2 to ★4.5 across 455 reviews. Guests praise the king penguins themselves, the guides and drivers, and the scenery and wildlife of Tierra del Fuego. The criticism is consistent: a very long day, long waits between stops, and a viewing distance that keeps you further from the birds than on Magdalena Island.

I really enjoyed the penguin experience and you get quite close to the king penguin colony. :) However, only consider booking this tour, if you are a wildlife lover, have spare time and don't mind spending most of the day in the van! It's more than 7 hours of driving + 2 ferry rides...

It's a really interesting tour and a unique opportunity to see the penguins of this species, as well as animals on the road like guanacos, foxes, birds, and dolphins. But the tour is pretty tiring. It's about 7 hours of travel time in the van in total. And about 2.5 hours on the ferry. And we couldn't get as close to the penguins as we did on Isla Magdalena.

It's a long day but worth it to ferry across the Straight of Magellan and see Tierra del Fuego. On the ferry ride we saw whales. In the main town Porvenir, we learned about the indigenous people who first populated the island. The guide and the driver were both wonderful. The King Penguin colony was great and the naturalist there told us a lot about their behavior which helped me understand and enjoy them more.

The highlight was seeing the King Penguins and the terrain of Tierra Del Fuego. As for improving the tour I would say shorten it up if possible. All the wasted time stopping at basically abandoned buildings etc was not worth the time in my opinion.

A brilliant day trip - we were very lucky with the weather (April). The ferry trip across the Strait was really scenic, the stop at the restaurant in Porvenir was perfectly timed. We stopped and saw dolphins and loads of llamas en route. The penguin reserve was amazing - can't recommend it enough. There were only about 100 on site at this time of year, but the staff were really knowledgeable and made it an unforgettable experience.

I will say that this was an extremely long day (about 14 hours) but very worth it to see King Penguins!! There were a few stops that we made along the way to break the journey up but obviously the penguin nature reserve was the absolute highlight

For many guests it is long but worth it: reviews describe about 7 hours in the van and 2.5 hours on ferries for 1 hour with the penguins. If that sounds like too much, a 5-hour Magdalena Island tour is the shorter penguin day.
You watch from a viewing hide about 30–50 m from the colony, with binoculars provided. You cannot walk among the birds as you do on Magdalena Island.
King penguins live at the colony, but the park is closed to visitors from June to September. It opens on limited days from roughly October to May, and 2026–27 dates are not yet published.

Yes, book ahead, because the park limits daily visitors, runs on limited days and asks for visits to be reserved in advance. Tours are built around a timed visit slot at the park.
A flight from Punta Arenas to Porvenir takes about 15 minutes, daily except Sundays. You would still need transport for the 115 km to the park, so the tours use the ferry.
